Brabus Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

I’ve been fortunate enough to see the new Mercedes-Benz SLS in the raw and its a little disappointing. Never the less, it is an impressive car.  Being a high performance tuning company specializing in Mercededs-Benz, what Brabus does to the SLS AMG is insane. Subtle changes here and nothing outrageous there, no big body kits or anything like that. Subtlety always impresses when taken as an overall package.  Carbon Fibre aerodynamic bits, ultra lightweight forged wheels, new suspension and a Titanium exhaust really help this car keep its weight down while adding a beautiful look and design.  Check out the full press release here.

Mercedes 190 EVO 2

In lieu of a lot of our material being written about the VAG family of cars, here is a little something something for the Mercedes lovers in us. The Mercedes 190 EVO series was a direct play against BMW’s E30 M3 back in the day.

Military Grade Mercedes

Recently at the Eurosatory Defense Expo in France, Mercedes-Benz debuted a military grade G-Wagon.  This Mercedes is no joke, especially the name; the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon Light Armoured Patrol Vehicle 6.X CONCEPT.  The name should give you an idea of what this Benz entails, a powerful diesel motor that can achieve up to 100 miles-per-hour and do that with up to 1.3 tons of cargo.  A short wheel base, adjustable shock absorbers and 17 inches of ground clearance enable this vehicle to conquer almost any terrain.  The armor plating surrounding the vehicle and the under carriage provides safety against small mines or other types of ammunition.  When these parts are damaged, they can be easily interchange for a quick turn around.  Interesting to see that Mercedes can come out with something so creative, but it is yet to be seen if this will be better than the Hummer?

EuroSunday Miami August 2009

ES000

Well, I’m certainly not going to say it was not hot out there; However, I will say that every month I yearn for that 4th Sunday of the month when a group of Euro enthusiasts come out to enjoy the camaraderie EuroSunday Miami brings. This month was no exception. Vintage is how I would categorize this outing. Not exactly the Bordeaux 1787 Chateau Lafite caliber, however, there were some exceptionally clean variants of  ’70s and ’80s Euros showing off their lines. From a 1973 Porsche 911t (t for Targa) to the brand new VW R32 MkV, every decade was represented.

Yes, the summer heat, the summer doldrums, or the back to school hoopla may have kept many of you Euro guys/gals at home, but the few die hard loyalist who show up time and time again are what keeps my admiration of the Euro community so high. Where else do you have the pleasure of getting up close and personal with these mechanical beauties of the past, present, and future and to converse with the owners who meticulously care for these engineering masterpieces?

ES001

Just a quick note, next EuroSunday will be moving to a new location. Be sure to sign-up to receive your invite and get the details for September at Eurosunday.net.

EuroSunday Miami July 2009

EuroSundayMiami_07.26.2009_002

If last July 2008 was any indication of how today was to turn-out, I would have slept-in. As 9:45AM rolled around without another Euro in sight, I figured the Summer doldrums had taken its toll on Euro-Enthusiasts’ this morning. Just as I was going to call it a day, having finished my Starbucks “doppio macchiato”, a few EuroSunday regulars showed up. I knew you guys wouldn’t let me down.

From the bright red E30 original M3 to a super mint vintage 1974(?) Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7, I was so glad I schlepped my arse out of bed that morning. Not to leave out our modern brethren, a very clean VW R32 was all spiffy and shined up. Love the powder-coated black wheels; It should have been an OEM option… Definitely another great turn-out of some very nice Euros: Porsche Cayman on boost!, Murdered out VW GTI, Mercedes W203 C32 AMG, Mercedes W210 E55 AMG, BMW E46 M3 Convertible…

Thanks to all of you that showed up; It made my weekend! Enjoy the pics…

Ferrari Challenge 2009 Event Coverage

The sun rose over the Homestead Motor Speedway in mid-March to reveal one of the year’s most anxiously awaited events, the Ferrari Challenge. Each of the two races is a 45 minute timed race where 23 Ferrari F430 Challenge cars compete for the best time and the checkered flag. Who was there mingling among 3 or 4-dozen Ferrari F430 Challenge cars? Rezmoto.

“The F430 Challenge was created to allow Ferrari customers a chance to enjoy their cars in a structured competitive environment, racing against other Ferrari owners on the most challenging race tracks in North America. Created as a gentlemen’s racing series, the emphasis in the series is on fair competition among Ferrari owners with support from dealer teams. The series’ goal is to provide a venue for amateur Ferrari drivers who are looking to race the finest and most technologically advanced racing machinery available while perfecting their racecraft in a friendly and collegial atmosphere.” (Source: Ferrari North America)

These are no ordinary Ferrari’s either. “The F430 Challenge retains the same general look and the 490 bhp engine as the road-going version. The car also incorporates a large number of significant track-oriented modifications and a host of new features not previously seen in Challenge cars,” says Ferrari North America. This was never more evident than at the start of the racing. The event spanned over many days, and Rezmoto was present for both of the main challenge races. As the 23 cars entered into the race staged up in the starting grid, you could hear the rumble of the engines from clear across the Speedway. In the early afternoon hours, the green flag dropped on both days of racing. As they rip past you the screaming exhaust note leaves you with only 4 senses remaining. Your mind barely has the opportunity to process the images your seeing; 23 Ferrari’s flying past at breakneck speeds. After the sound of the cars leaves you deaf, the stench of race gas, spent clutch, and glowing brake pad’s hits you like a freight train and scorches your nostrils leaving you with only 3 remaining senses.

For the majority of the race we spent our time in the photography pit adjacent to turn #2. The track is a mixture of the inner road course track and the outer NASCAR oval track. Drivers race around the inner road course then exit out onto the NASCAR straight away that bridges the two sides of the road course. Turn #2 is the second turn after the NASCAR straight away section, so the drivers were coming in quite fast. The buzz of the motors downshifting simultaneously as they enter turn #2 is unmistakable. Its just one of the many notes and tones that drone from these works of art as they rip around the track, any one of which would make Beethoven jealous.

I had the opportunity to speak briefly with the winner of both the first and second days of racing, Scott Tucker. He remarks that it was a, “great race”, and that “everybody is getting stronger. Good competition.” He also said in a humble fashion, “things went my way, so Ill take it.”

“The Ferrari Challenge is one of the numerous “exclusive” experiences that Ferrari offers its customers — and whether owners are actually racing in the series, dining in the luxurious VIP hospitality tents, participating in weekend driving clinics or socializing with those that share their enthusiasm for Ferrari, the weekend provides a unique atmosphere and incomparable experience.” (Source: Ferrari North America).

Even if you don’t have the luxury of being the proud owner of a Ferrari, you can certainly feel just as lucky if you have the opportunity to come to one of the Ferrari Challenge events. We strongly recommend you try to check out an event in your area; we are already making our plans for next year’s event. More details can be found at: www.ferrarichallenge.com
